PHILADELPHIA — Disabled Pennsylvanians trying to stay in their homes are suing state welfare officials over alleged delays and denials with their applications for in-home care.
Disability lawyers say long delays are denying their clients help with bathing, meal preparation and other essential needs.
The plaintiffs in a potential class-action suit filed Monday include a Chester County woman with cerebral palsy. The suit says she was denied eligibility in a brief phone call. The disability lawyers say they helped her get an in-home evaluation seven weeks later, and she is now awaiting word on her application.
Robert Meek of the Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania filed the suit.
Meek says that program funds are still available, and that in-home help is cheaper than nursing-home care.
