In 2 days a Halloween Haunted House is set to open at the Pennhurst State School and Hospital. It was a home for the mentally disabled. The Arc of PA sees it as "an abomination" because of how it is perceived for people with disabilities.
On first hearing the name 'state school and hospital,' those without knowledge of what it was does not setup any negative thoughts. However, when you learn it was a home for the mentally disabled, does that change your opinion?
Will the haunted house use the occasion to disrespect the former residents? It would inappropriate for them to do so and we hope they wouldn't. If the haunted house is successful this year it may become a yearly attraction.
