Accessible Stall For People With Disabilities Only?

A Dear Abby reader in May asked if it was okay to use an accessible stall because she a "plus-size woman." The ladies mother was upset by it as she said accessible stalls are just like accessible parking spaces - restricted to those who need it.

Abby told the reader that the woman should use the stall if there is nobody with a disability there - if someone enters at the same time and has a disability, that person should get preference.

This past week, readers voiced their opinion - should the stall be used? Who gets preference?

As someone who uses an accessible stall, there should be no reason it should not be used as any other stall. However, in most restrooms there are more non-accessible stalls than accessible stalls, so if possible those without disabilities should chose those (non-accessible) first but they are under no obligation.

If the restroom is empty when you enter - you pick a stall. If someone enters, at the same time as you, please use another stall.
